Opinion Excerpt from The Acorn

By Dan Stepenosky, LVUSD superintendent

The quality of a community is directly linked to the strength, health and success of the local public schools.

The Las Virgenes Unified School District ranks in the top two percent across the state and has received numerous awards and accolades from U.S. News and World Report, Newsweek, and from the State and Federal Departments of Education.

Community support for local schools is essential to maintain that strength, health and success.

Here in Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Hidden Hills and beyond, the community has consistently supported LVUSD schools through Measure E for the past 12 years.

The $98 per parcel measure brings in $2.3 million per year, which is the equivalent of 36 teachers. Measure E protects critical core programs in math, science, technology and reading, funds class-size reduction, counseling services and extracurricular programs, including arts and athletics.

On Nov. 3, Measure E will be on the ballot for renewal. The school board is asking the community to renew the measure without increasing the current tax rate to support excellence in education. There will also be three city council elections (Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Westlake Village) and a school board election on the ballot.

Please make your voice heard by voting absentee or by coming out to your local polling place on Nov. 3.
